Scaling E ects in the CSP Phase Transition ?

چکیده
Phase transitions in constraint satisfaction problems (CSP's) are the subject of intense study. We identify a control parameter for random binary CSP's. There is a rapid transition in the probability of a CSP having a solution at a critical value of this parameter. This parameter allows diierent phase transition behaviour to be compared in an uniform manner, for example CSP's generated under diierent regimes. We then show that within classes, the scaling of behaviour can be modelled by a technique called \\nite size scaling". This applies not only to probability of solubility, as has been observed before in other NP-problems, but also to search cost. Furthermore, the technique applies with equal validity to several diierent methods of varying problem size. As well as contributing to the understanding of phase transitions, we contribute by allowing much ner grained comparison of algorithms, and for accurate empirical extrapolations of behaviour.

متن کاملExperimental Characterization of the Ising Model in Disordered Antiferromagnets
The Ising model is one of the most studied and basic models for phase transitions. In this article, the current status of experimental studies characterizing two classic models of second-order phase transitions in short-range interaction systems in the presence of quenched disorder, the random-exchange Ising model (REIM) and the randomeld Ising model (RFIM), is presented. The discussion concent...

متن کاملExact Phase Transitions and Approximate Algorithm of #CSP
In the past decade there has been a significant interest in the phase transition of NP-complete or NP-hard problems. However, it seems difficult to obtain the location of the exact phase transition point. (Xu and Li 2000) may be one of the few works that can prove the existence of phase transition and identified the phase transition points exactly. By introducing a revision of the standard CSP ...
متن کاملOn the phase transitions of random k-constraint satisfaction problems
Constraint satisfaction has received increasing attention these years. Intense research has focused on solving all kinds of constraint satisfaction problems (CSPs). In this paper, first we propose a random CSP model, named k-CSP, that guarantees the existence of phase transitions under certain circumstances. The exact location of the phase transition is quantified and experimental results are p...
